Abstract

This study examines the narration of tales and the insertion of proverbs both as a traditional medium of entertainment and as a tool for inter-clan dispute resolution in Platfontein in particular, and Africa in general. The “performative” theory was used to set up a discourse thread with tales/proverbs and inter-clan dispute resolution. Data collection tools included questionnaires and interviews. Specific disputes are identified and resolution experts’ strategy of story-telling is probed; that is, how experts incorporate tales and proverbs to soothe dispute situations, promote dialogue and alter behaviors. A blend of tales/proverbs and dispute resolution leaves one with the irrefutable conclusion that African story-telling has a multifunctional role—to entertain, educate, and resolve disputes in an African society.
