Abstract

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of the Initial Competence Test (ICT) based on the professional competence development model for biology teachers in Surakarta Residency, Indonesia. The research was carried out by examining limited and controlled groups on the pretest and posttest assessment. A descriptive quantitative approach was applied to interpret the results, supported by statistical data analysis. The findings were drawn from discussions considering quantitative and qualitative fact. Results of the study on the effectiveness of the implementation of biology teachers’ competence development model based on the Initial Competence Test (ICT) showed that the score of competence improved by 44.44 percent, from 27.78 in the pretest to 72.22 in the posttest after the new program implementation. Based on the statistical analysis, the improvement can be identified for each competence item. The highest percentage improvement was gained by the competence of “to understand the concepts, laws, and theories of biology and to implement them in practical situations,” showing 38.89 percent improvement. Meanwhile, the lowest improvement was 13.27 percent showed by the competence of “to carry out research to improve teacher professionalism.” This paper provides information on the effectiveness of an initial competence test implemented for biology teachers.
