Abstract

It is observed that artists who create works in the field of fine arts before and during the foundation of Republic of Turkey have been under the effect of fine arts education they have received from the West also in the field of printmaking as well as many other fields of plastic arts. Fine art education background of artists in the academic sense who create works in the field of printmaking is an indicator of this situation. This Western concept of art seems to have affected the course contents of academies and institutes opened in our country in this field of arts as well as academics and artists. Our artists who have come to important places in the academies in our country following the fine arts education they have received from the West have trained the next generation artists and have contributed to the Turkish art. Modernization actions in the Turkish art have began especially subsequent to sending students to Republic of France in the period of the Ottoman Empire for the purpose of academic fine arts education. In this study, it is aimed to discuss the definition of the art of printmaking and development phases and reveal the reflections in the academic fine arts education in our country. Furthermore, it is intended to examine the developments in the field of printmaking since the establishment of academies providing education in our country and the effect of the fine arts education of artists received from the West who work in this field on the productivity thereof in printmaking.
