Abstract

Regardless of major crackdowns, pseudo-democratic practices, and the possibility of prison or death, Generation Wave remains a vital element to the maintenance of Burma’s pro-democracy movement. Generation Wave is as a political Hip Hop group dedicated to bringing people together to overthrow Burma’s military government/junta. Generation Wave utilizes the rhetoric of the oppressed, vernacular discourse to bring individuals together to fight against the junta’s dominant ideology. Generation Wave’s vernacular discourse, specifically the utilization of worldwide web, is used as rhetorical strategies to maintain the movement. The present analysis will demonstrate Generation Wave’s ability to utilize worldwide web and tenets of Hip Hop, particularly graffiti and rap music, to educate and motivate individuals to maintain the pro-democracy movement in Burma.
