Abstract

There is more evidence today than ever before showing that high-quality preschool education benefits children greatly. Research indicates that it can enhance children’s cognitive abilities, reduce poverty, and create a foundation for lifelong learning. Unfortunately, the United States is behind many industrialized countries in providing this form of education. In addition, low-income children are more likely to be enrolled in low-quality programs or not enrolled in preschool at all. This study consists of an analysis of research on early education. Critical race theory was used to document the consequences of not providing adequate early education for low-income children of color and to make recommendations for creating a better early education system for these children.
