Abstract

Sustainable design is the art of designing physical objects and the build environment to comply with the principles of economic, social and ecological sustainability. It is a growing trend within the fields of urban planning, architecture, interior design, engineering, graphic design and fashion. The purpose of our research is the production of an artifact in the context of sustainable design. The processes and the methods used for the realization of the artifact/object focuses on the social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability. Furthermore, the theoretical background of this research will also be supported with examples of literature that refer to sustainable practices. The outcome of this research is an artifact, a table, that is made of paper blocks that can be organized into various shapes in space, and glass surfaces with texts on environmental issues. The attempt is to create a functional object that is sustainable friendly and also offers the user information on the environment. This led us to the development of a ‘sustainable circle’ that diagramatically shows the factors that should be achivied to reach the sustainable design principles. With the presentation of this emerging design work, this paper also aims to illustrate the development of an innovative way of design thinking that promotes sustainability.
