Abstract

Hong Kong, a place in the shadow of colonial cultures, returned to the Republic of China in 1997. During this post-colonial period, Hong Kong has experienced a dramatic change in its political landscape. Artists in Hong Kong proactively responded to the prevalent social situations. One of the examples of such artists is Luke Ching Chin-wai. He is a Hong Kong-based artist who, since 2007, has been practicing socially engaged art to arouse the awareness of the public on the social issues in Hong Kong. In this study, an interview has been conducted with Ching, and the trajectory of his ten-year “Please Give Security Guards Chairs” movement has been reviewed within a discussion on socially engaged art.
