Abstract

The aim of this article is to conduct a study regarding research into redefinition concerning architecture, design, and design principles in architecture. For this purpose, the article focuses on a case study in order to interpret the issue; a house from Qajar period (1791–11925 AD). The Qajar period is significant in Iran’s history since its proximity to the contemporary time engenders a wide range of remaining buildings. Redefining an architectural case study could be considered through diverse aspects but in this study design is considered to be the main framework and a basis for redefinition because the contemporary meaning of design is the continuum from idea to product. Design, with its pervasive meaning, has rooted in almost every domain including architecture. In order to prove the proposition that redefining a historic house through design could lead to a new understanding, design principles will be assessed in a case study: “Forughalmolk Qajar house in Shiraz.”
