Abstract

This paper is based on research conducted to explore how young adult literature with gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender/queer (GLBTQ) characters can be used in the English classroom to combat homophobia and heterosexism. Given the continuing struggle for equality for GLBTQ people, and the resounding silence that all too frequently surrounds sexual diversity in schools in Australia, this paper seeks to explore the desperate need for discourse about sexuality in schools, to promote open discussion in English classrooms about sexual diversity and to encourage inclusion. Young adult imaginative literature provides the opportunity for English teachers and teacher-librarians to discuss sexual diversity with their students. It also provides a way for students that may not have access to GLBTQ role models, to read about their own stories, to create an identity of their own and to find acceptance and an alternate possibility to an often heterosexist and homophobic reality.
