Abstract

This study identifies the social, psychological, and economic effects associated with polygamy from an Emirati woman’s point of view during the second semester of 2022. To achieve the objectives of the study, an intentional sample of 200 women, who are the first wives of their husbands in the UAE, were selected, and a questionnaire was distributed that covered three areas: psychological effects, social effects, and economic effects. Google Drive was used to design the study tool, and the data was processed and analyzed using the (SPSS) program. The most notable findings of this study are that the psychological effects of polygamy on Emirati women are the most impactful, followed by the economic effects, and, finally, the social effects. It was also found that there are statistically significant differences in the average effects resulting from polygamy due to the wife’s educational level and age but that there are no statistically significant differences due to the kinship between the spouses and the husband’s financial status. Based on the results, the study recommends providing psychological support programs for wives in polygamous families, distributing awareness leaflets, and holding counseling sessions to overcome the psychological and social effects that polygamy can cause.
