Abstract

Photographs of an artist/researcher/lecturer are used as a vehicle for a retrospective theoretical and analytical inquiry into his own learning. As an autoethnographic inquiry the central exploration focuses on the photograph as a record of experience, memory, time, light and reflection and how these elements combine in his artistic practice. In addition it examines how awareness of Bellette’s own learning has subsequently shaped his research and teaching of photomedia at tertiary undergraduate level. As an autoethnographic inquiry it acknowledges the randomness and complexity of the lived experiences, and as such represents his attempts to make sense (albeit partial and provisional) of these experiences. The author’s acknowledge that the learning journey is historically, culturally and locally specific, and that this paper represents a constructed reality filled with competing, discourses and vulnerable to the next learning encounter.
