Abstract

In the UK, recent times have portrayed health care provided by the NHS as equivocally shortcoming, allegedly due to the lack of a commensurate rise in relevant resources to match public demand. We suggest an alternate etiology to the unprecedented pressures faced by the NHS, namely, a right-fixated mindset. This article challenges this approach by utilizing the principles of Gandhian health care. Equipped with such knowledge apparatus, we reach the stance that for us to realize our right to health, we must fulfil our duty toward it. For this, we must position health as patient-led rather than patient-centered. Literary opinion critiques the patient-led model as paternalistic and even unethical. Utilizing the Gandhian model of health, we argue that a patient-led model can be implemented in a mutualistic manner. So as to transform these principles into action, the article proposes the Personal Quality Improvement (PQI) concept can be used as one such ideal that empowers individuals, allowing them to take their health into their own hands and in doing so taking health care from being patient-centered to patient-led.
