Abstract

This qualitative study aims to investigate the requirements of stakeholders for Thailand’s music education management in both the short-term and long-term. The participants consisted of three groups; 1) representatives of teachers from the Office of the Basic Education Commission (OBEC) schools, 2) representatives of music educator and music curriculum developers, and 3) representatives of teachers and students from OBEC schools who have created outstanding works of music. The instruments used in this study were an online open-ended questionnaire and a focus group discussion. The open-ended questionnaire was used to collect data from representatives of teachers from OBEC schools and teachers and students with outstanding works of music from six regions in Thailand. At the same time, the focus group discussion was used to gather information from eighteen music educators and music curriculum developers. The findings show that the requirements of musicians, musical instruments, music activities, budgets, and support from schools’ directors are urgent issues that need to be considered in music education management. The long-term issues, however, are reconstruction of music curricula and sustainable support from the government. The findings provide qualified information necessary for stakeholders when making and developing policies, plans, budgets, and successful management.
