Abstract

The global workplace is becoming increasingly exciting and complex. Not only are managers called upon to manage a multicultural workforce, they often do so with workers who are geographically dispersed all over the world and who collaborate mainly via the use of technology. This article seeks to provide a toolkit for managers who operate within this type of work structure. Following individual interviews with mid- and upper-level managers, we identified two specific distance management competencies along with their corresponding behavioral indicators. Ultimately, these competencies are meant to enable managers to coordinate workers as well as to facilitate their use of technology.
