Abstract

This paper reconsiders two aspects of the schema developed by art-theorist Miwon Kwon to analyse developments in site-related art practices since the 1960s—critical potential and mobility. Kwon’s schema is made up of three models of the site, the phenomenomological, institutional-critique and discursive models. This paper proposes a reconceptualisation of the first model that alters the relationships between the models in the schema, so that, rather than demonstrating a progression between models that leaves only the last one remaining relevant today, the schema instead recognises the potential for ongoing development within each model.
