Abstract

In the search for graphic design projects that engage students in social issues while simultaneously examining additional aspects of design, map design is an ideal candidate. Through this type of project, students learn to become more informed about contemporary social and environmental issues, while concurrently enhancing their abilities to collaborate effectively, experiencing the value of cross-disciplinary perspectives, and advancing their skill in graphic design and information design. Initially this exploration focused solely on the design of Green Maps ®. The Green Map System is an international organization that uses maps as tools for charting local resources for sustainable living. The use of maps as a venue for socially driven design study has now been expanded into additional social topics. This paper will cover the evolution and structure of this project.
