Abstract

While supply chain decarbonization is imperative due to carbon emission regulations, volatile fuel prices, and increasing awareness and preference from end users, some of the initiatives conflict with just-in-time approaches and have a negative impact on supply chain performance such as lead time and inventory on hand. In this paper, we examine supply chain decarbonization efforts by logistics partners of a global apparel and footwear company. We examine their decarbonization initiatives and identify patterns of decarbonization efforts and innovative practices among different groups of logistics partners. We discuss core issues related to decarbonization from economic and supply chain aspects, propose a framework for supply chain decarbonization, and suggest decarbonization priority for firms that wish to pursue decarbonization strategically.
