Abstract

The beginning of the twentieth century saw the race for the South Pole reach its zenith. It came down to two contenders—Robert Scott from England and Roald Amundsen from Norway. Why did one succeed, while the other, with his entire party, perish? This article aims to show, by contrasting their leadership styles, the importance of embracing adaptive change in crisis situations. The article explores these themes across the leadership styles of Robert Scott and Roald Amundsen and gleans some insight for the contemporary manager.
