Abstract

This essay explores the impact of the US deportation policy in Latin America and the Caribbean by evaluating integration programs for deportees in Barbados and Guatemala from the perspectives of nongovernmental organizations. These two countries have adopted effective comprehensive integration models which dispel long-held beliefs that deportees are contributing to the increase in criminal activities. The study sought to raise an understanding of what services are provided for deportees by analyzing nongovernmental organizations directors’ experiences and associations with deportees. This study found that, without effective integration programs to reorient citizens back into their respective societies, the conditions surrounding deportees will have adverse consequences for both regions.
