Abstract

This article presents a tool to assess competences developed by preschool and primary school children through collaborative digital storytelling creation. That tool was created within the framework of the CINEMA project, carried out between 2014 and 2015 in rural schools of Asturias (Spain). After describing the stages of this project, our article shows the structure supporting this assessment tool, which consists of thirty-two indicators to measure the level of socio-emotional, digital, narrative, communicative, and creative competences reached by the schoolchildren. Such indicators were established on a consensus basis by the teachers involved and were subsequently adapted to the features of this task, as well as to students’ level. After being validated with the Delphi method, teachers assessed each student at the end of the experience, so that their educational usefulness could be verified. By way of example, three digital stories representative of the competences addressed are described. Finally, emphasis is laid on the fact that the CINEMA project has not only contributed to encouraging innovative experiences in the schools involved but also showed the versatility of digital storytelling, in addition to its ability to promote multiple competences. A competence assessment tool, easily transferable to similar experiences in several educational contexts, has been created due to this project.
