Abstract

The current paper proposes the definition of the concept “Hybrid Meta Images,” intrinsic to a post-internet context based on transmedia and participatory practices of media and sign usage, remix and circulation, as well as visualization techniques for mapping the Web and tracking user participation. Avant-garde artists pioneered many of such practices since the 90s, engaging in critical approaches towards the internet and models of communication and representation, used to embody and make visible the underlying processes of networks, key to our everyday life. The argument for supporting the “Hybrid Meta Images” concept is built by means of a hermeneutic and semiotic framework that draws a map of connections, which convokes and puts in dialogue voices of several authors from diverse fields such as literature, philosophy, sociology, history, media, computer science, and new media art. This proposition is also grounded on a selection of projects and artworks that contribute to the consolidation of the ongoing research on visual quests about contemporary networks, fostered by internet’s technology and socio communicative paradigms.
