Abstract

Examines characteristics and consequences of hate crimes--racial slurs, threatening phone calls, brutal assaults, and even mass murder. Drawing upon his many years of teaching, researching, and writing about prejudice and violence, Levin explores the nature of hate attacks, the motivations of hate crime offenders, and the elements of everyday life that support and encourage inter-group conflict and violence. He then makes a number of suggestions for eliminating hate crimes and fostering a culture of tolerance and respect for differences.
