Abstract

The TeamSTEPPSTM system is recognized as an effective method for preparing healthcare professionals to engage in interprofessional teamwork. The early exposure of future healthcare professionals to team-based practice has the potential to impact health outcomes locally and internationally. This article will address student self-evaluation of pre-departure preparation and post in-country clinic experiences utilizing the TeamSTEPPS Perception Questionnaire. Data will highlight how early interprofessional teamwork opportunities while healthcare students are in training may provide the knowledge and experiences to better understand the context of health in various settings, and may contribute to building capacity of students to become leaders in the field of global health. Data further support opportunities for development of training to promote interdisciplinary and team-based care, which has been identified as an essential competency for all health professional training.
