Abstract

One of the central challenges in online instruction is the loss of the personal contact that exists in the traditional classroom. This study examines the effectiveness of integrating asynchronous video-sharing technology into online classrooms. The usefulness of YouSeeU technology is discussed in the delivery of specific assignments in online courses that emphasize oral communication skills. YouSeeU is being tested in a Spanish course and a journalism course where students are required to deliver oral assignments using the video technology. Instructors are also able to deliver video feedback to each student. Qualitative and quantitative measures are applied in the evaluation of the integration of the technology in curriculum enhancement and student-teacher interaction, as well as student engagement and achievement. The results show that students receive higher course grades and are more engaged in the YouSeeU sections. Students also state that the YouSeeU video-sharing technology impacts their interaction with instructors and helps them apply the course content outside of the classroom.
