Abstract

This paper provides an overview from a grounded, theoretical perspective of virtual reality and simulations in the educational environment. It will articulate how this technology is used to advance knowledge in education. This paper also discusses how Valdosta State University is using the virtual world of Second Life to enhance educational development. It further identifies how using virtual reality as a learning tool within the classroom setting, in particular, a graduate advanced health assessment course, affected students’ perceptions and attitudes toward Second Life at Valdosta State. The students responded overwhelmingly with positive feedback. The positive reception and excitement about the potential usage of virtual reality for enhanced learning was remarkable. Virtual reality and simulations in nursing education has been evolving for numerous years. Recent technological advances have increased its usability and practically. Using technology creatively in times of fiscal restraint can potentially lead to positive outcomes in any program.
