Abstract

Due to the increasing diversity in today’s classrooms, the teacher’s knowledge of culturally relevant pedagogy is extremely important. Certain questions that must be addressed are: Does the teacher have experience with diverse cultures? What is the primary language of the diverse students and their home culture? Is the teacher a member of a diverse culture? The teacher’s expectations and level of communication greatly affects the student’s motivation and performance in school. Teacher-student interactions also influence the social and emotional climate of the classroom. It is crucial for teacher educators to demonstrate respect for diversity and prepare new teachers for the implementation of culturally relevant teaching practices. This will ultimately have great impact on student learning and enhance their collaborative relationships in the classroom.
