Abstract

The Enlightenment sensibilities separating art and science have come under increasing scrutiny as postmodernity provokes us to question the simplistic division between scientists as objective examiners of found knowledge-objects set in a pre-existing world, in contrast to artists who conjure up artefacts to express inter-subjective meaning from within their own creativity. Recently, a hybrid ArtScience movement has emerged which challenges this 1-dimensional objective/subjective axis and has set out its agenda in journals such as Leonardo. However, whilst this youthful ArtScience movement has already shown itself to be a vigorous and productive force, it still struggles to find a strong and unique aesthetic to underpin its analytical foundation.
