Abstract

I argue that Dewey and Heidegger have more in common than is usually thought, and being able to see that education (Dewey) is for mortals (Heidegger) can help us better understand the situation of humanities education today. This point is illustrated with examples taken from an Icelandic story of premodern life and an elementary school class in West Virginia in the fifties.
