Abstract

The expectation to teach students how to be good citizens has become integrated into the curriculum and standards of public education. However, schools are not properly preparing students to be good citizens for their future; a future in the digital age. Secondary schools that implement 1:1 technology have a need to implement a comprehensive digital citizenship curriculum for students in order to prepare them to be good digital citizens in the school community. The “Digital Citizenship” Preparing Secondary Learners for the Digital Age” learning module seeks to teach secondary students the fundamentals of being good digital citizens through five main topics: responsible use of technology, digital footprints, cyberbullying, cybersecurity, and netiquette. The module culminates into a final project where students will demonstrate their digital citizenship skills in the creation of a public service announcement teaching other secondary students about how to be good digital citizens.
