Abstract

This study is conducted on twenty-six samples from a phenomenon of a particular type of migrant street vendor stalls, namely Kios angalai in the urban area of Kupang city, Indonesia. The study aims to discover the strategies and approaches that have been implemented to define and defend the territory in the occupation process; and, subsequently, explain how the strategies and approaches have been implemented during the occupation process. Research data was collected regarding the concept of space and spatial behavior of kiosk occupants, and the social context of kiosk existence, while exploring the occupation process. Eventually, this research found several strategies that classified into two kinds of applied approaches, namely: mental approach and physical approach. The balance in the implementation of both types of approaches is the key to a successful territory occupation in an unaffordable urban space environment.
