Abstract

With growing Sino-foreign cooperation and increasing investment by Chinese firms abroad, it is crucial to assure that Chinese executives know how to manage across cultural differences. The author of this article examined cultural awareness and cognitive cultural intelligence (cognitive CQ) among Chinese undergraduate business students and the impact of university cross-cultural management (CCM) courses on both of these dimensions. This study finds that Chinese undergraduate business students are moderately well culturally aware, and they exhibit an average cognitive CQ. Moreover, both parameters positively correlate with academic CCM courses. Thus, educational cross-cultural training supports the increase of students’ cultural awareness and cognitive CQ. Additionally, respondents in the study were asked to evoke potential scenarios that a person arriving in China for the first time might face. The issues mentioned indicate a generally well-developed cultural awareness.
