Abstract

Music intervention can have a significant impact in perpetuating functional adaptation, enhancing audiation and promoting brain plasticity in children with autism spectrum disorder. This article elucidates the design of electroacoustic compositions created to accompany sensory integration therapy sessions conducted by occupational therapists. Original works utilising acoustic instruments and electronic soundscapes premised on practice-led research were crafted through musical hubs. The use of music in therapy and rehabilitation is an established field of study. The passage to the brain through the auditory system is instrumental in securing neural attention and sensory response. Sensory integration theory describes how neurological processing affects the integration of sensory information from the body and the environment in regulating behaviour and emotion. Composers are encouraged to work with occupational therapists in creating original music for sensory integration therapy.
