Corporate Social Initiatives of Top Oil Players in the Philippines

Abstract

Corporate social initiatives become crucial to every firm whose business has direct impact on the environment. This study has been undertaken to examine the corporate social responsibility activities of top oil players in the Philippines, namely Pilipinas Shell Petroleum Corporation, Chevron Philippines, Inc., Petron Corporation, Seaoil Philippines, Inc., Unioil Petroleum Philippines, Inc. and Petronas Energy Philippines, Inc. The CSR reports of these oil companies were validated and analyzed based on the Pradhan model of Corporate Social Initiatives consisting of social development, social upliftment, environment and culture, health and safety, and community welfare. The results have shown that there has been increasing development of corporate social responsibility actions by the top oil players in the Philippine, aligning their resources with the needs of their respective stakeholders. The oil players in the Philippines are also mindful of the societal and environmental problems that the country has been currently experiencing, which are highlighted in their corporate social responsibility programs, such as sustainability projects, education, and community service. Meaningful corporate social initiatives must contribute to improve the quality of life of the community and the company’s economic condition.
