Abstract

The dialogues between architecture and other disciplines are highly encouraged for more integrative approaches. Parallels in the practices of architecture and fashion design have been pointed out regarding the protection of human body and more as being a means of expressing identity. This article aims to investigate the interfaces of these disciplines in the contemporary Thai context. With a foundation of theoretical and research reviews, case studies, and interviews with key informants, two sets of multiple variables were formulated in the format of rating scales, each to be evaluated by corresponding architects and fashion designers. These two sets of multiple complex data were analysed through an exploratory approach of factor analysis technique. Both the evaluation outputs and the results of factor analysis reveal parallel practices between architecture and fashion design regarding aesthetic directions and tectonic strategies as well as cultural factors. Significantly, the design project “Bangkok Fashion Design Hub” has confirmed the interweaving practices of both disciplines. With the application of the tectonic engagement called “Sabai,” the parallel technique of breast wrapping for women’s garments was deployed to shelter the building. It provides protection as well as comfort in the hot and humid climate, reflecting Thai identity in the context of Thai culture.
