Abstract

Even though language learning strategies have been extensively researched since the 1980s, it is still an interesting topic to investigate due to changing circumstances that have continually caused new learning strategies to emerge. The objectives of this article are to compare the use of foreign language learning strategies by Thai university students before and after the increasing use of such innovations as mobile phone applications, and to discuss changes in the types of learning strategy. The data were collected qualitatively through students’ written reflections and reports in a foreign language learning course, which aims at training language learning techniques to suit different learning styles. The major findings showed: 1) the use of cognitive strategies for most language tasks, except speaking for which compensatory strategies were largely employed; 2) different strategies recommended for future language learning, particularly cognitive strategies for reading and social strategies for speaking; and 3) the recommendation of various digital media along with social strategies for both reserved and outspoken learners. The study shed some light for language teachers and policy makers in dealing with new-generation learners and providing appropriate and up-to-date training to foreign language teachers.
