Challenge and Success
Abstract
Information designers make the complex simple. It’s an important skill, because the pace of change in communications is accelerating. Special interest publishing sites; evolving markets for print, broadcast and web; rapid growth in the multi-media and virtual environments; and the merging roles of writers, editors, publishers, printers, broadcasters and distributors — each of these trends is making effective communication more complex. Mount Royal University’s Bachelor of Communication — Information Design degree is the only major of its kind in Western Canada. This paper presents a discussion of the challenges and successes the new information design degree, now in its third year, has faced in preparing students in the art and science of “designing” information.
