Abstract

Minimal research investigates the implementation of Arts on Prescription (AoP) visual arts programs for older people. How the professional artist facilitates program participants’ psychological well-being remains unexplored. Ethnographic video recordings of a professional artist’s approach during interactions with program participants across an eight-week-long AoP program, visual arts stream, were observed. Thematic analysis protocols were followed. One superordinate theme, Passionate, described the professional artist’s enthusiasm for art and empathic connection with program participants and overarched six subthemes: Relaxed and Playful Approach to Art, Encouraging Learning and Exploration, Enthusiasm and Enjoyment, Warm Welcoming, Empathic Insight, and Nurturing Original Art Style. Working alongside program participants with integrity, the professional artist encouraged a fun yet safe space psychologically, which fostered achievement and psychological well-being. In celebrating artistic self-expression, humor could encourage group relaxation, whereas constructive encouragement could challenge and reassure. Over time, the professional artist’s enthusiasm and enjoyment revealed a growing appreciation of program participants’ resilience and unmet needs for psychological well-being. Novel video-based analysis revealed how a professional artist facilitated program participants’ artistic creativity and own style, interests, and skills. Empathy and enjoyment were pathways for recognizing and responding to needs for belonging, conversation, achievement, and friendship. AoP implications are discussed.
