Abstract

The purpose of this research was to investigate factors contributing to psychological burnout of regular and special education teachers. More specifically, this study reported the responses of survey participants to the Teacher Burnout Scale (TBC) designed by Seidman, S. A. and J. Zage in 1987. A total of 510 participants responded to the survey: 261 at regular (51.2%), and 249 special education teachers (48.8%). The instrument identified levels of psychological burnout of teachers. Additional variables studied included gender and years of professional experience. Results reported that female participants had higher burnout levels. In addition, teachers with 5 or less years of experience reported higher burnout levels. Findings have significant implications for professional development and teacher training to prevent and alleviate burnout.
