Abstract

According to prior research, buildings share a maximum percentage of energy consumption of 39 percent. Of that, ~15 percent of energy is spent to keep buildings insulated. Approximately 13.6 quadrillion British thermal units (BTU) of energy was spent in the year 2013. In view of this, insulation materials are an essential material in building construction, especially aerogel with its good thermal conductivity. Even though initial costs of application are high, it is more reliable when considering long-term economy. In this article, a review is given of aerogel properties and aerogel insulation in building applications, with its main focus on potential window utilization.
