Materials for the University of Illinois Course.
Civil and Environmental Engineering, Project Based Learning
CEE 398 PBL
We are happy to have all of you join us as students in this course. We are also excited to be working with you in the Scholar enviroment, a next-generation Learning Management System being developed by educators here at the University of Illinois. You may want to "Star" this Update (the button in the top-right corner) as it will contain a lot of information to help you get started.
In this class we will be using the Compass2g platform to download Case Studies and take Quizzes. We will use the Scholar platform for interaction with our Classmates.
To get started using Scholar, check out the Shared Document "A Quick Introduction to Scholar" on the right panel of your Class Community. You can also check out the Scholar Tutorials to explore all the features of this platform.
You can expect us to put up at least two Updates each week - the Monday Update and Thursday Update. Be sure to read these for information and important class materials.

Sustainability on Campus
This week we will be looking at the 2015 Illinois Climate Action Plan and talking about how the campus deals with Sustainability issues.
Sustainability is: Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.
The Illinois Climate Action Plan (iCAP) outlines a path for the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to achieve carbon neutrality as soon as possible, and no later than 2050. The Campus committed to this ambitious goal when it signed the American College and University Presidents' Climate Commitment (ACUPCC) in 2008.

Assignment #3
This week we are continuing to refine our Project Ideas. By now you should have figured out the problem that you want to solve and have identified people who might make good collaborators.
What you need to do for next week. In the comments below write a couple sentances on each of the following points:
We will be matching you up into Project Groups based on the Problems that you identify. So make sure you read your Peers' comments so that you will know ho you can work with!
Attached is an example of a CEE Project Summary from Professor Schideman. This goes beyond what is expected of you for this assignment but should be helpful in understanding the scope of your project. It will be useful for your Milestone 1 Document when you get there.
Due: Before Noon on Thursday, September 17.
Waste Water Treatment
This week we will be talking about Waste Water Treatment and taking a field trip to the Champaign-Urbana Waste Water Treatment Plant.
REMINDER: If you need a ride to the Waste Water Treatment Plant you should show up at NCEL by 3:45 to car pool over there. We will meet on the back loading dock, on the North side of the building at the end of Main Street (just outside the back door by our usual classroom).
If you want to drive yourself, you can meet us at the facility at 4:00 PM. Follow the directions on this Google Map to get there. This is the best way to get to the front gate of the facility. Follow the drive around to the main entrance.

Your assignments before we meet:
Start Forming Teams
As we mentioned in class on Thursday, we will be forming Project Teams next week. If you have already identified some people who you want to work with in a Project Team, please make a comment below and tell us the names of the people you are working with.
Remember, each team should be 2-3 people. You should have a problem that you have identified and at least an idea of how you would like to pursue a solution. In class next week, we will match up anyone who has not yet found a team. Make sure you check out the Assignment #2 & Assignment #3 Updates and message Peers with similar interests to make a team beforehand!
