Possible questions to prompt thinking (जल्दी से सोचने के लिए). You can use a combination of Hindi and English depending on the students' abilities to use English:

  • What do you know about Pranayam?
  • Have you seen it?
  • Can you do it?
  • Have you seen it on TV?

Students talk to their partner and then share your ideas with another pair. You can then call on 1 or 2 students to share an idea that they heard during the discussion. This may all be in Hindi.

2. Show the video on Pranayam. This video is in Hindi.

In the following activity students read the textbook chapter 2 (refer pg. 6).

After that, students will do a fun activity of following the instructions/steps as mentioned in the chapter and practise the given yoga.

While practising the yoga students use the English words(like touch your eyes).

Students can take help from the glossary(शब्दकोश) given at the end of the chapter to have a better understanding of the words.

Jigsaw Activity

Expert Groups: Students will form in their computer groups. Each group will research and find a video on one type of Pranayam. They add a video and list at least 5 steps. There will be 6 students in each group.

Sharing/Cooperative Groups Groups: The teacher will ask students to do the sharing activity. New groups will be formed with a student from each original group. Number the students 1-6.

Students will share the steps of the yoga from the watched videos in English language using the Glossary taught.

3. Conjunctions

For the Student

Learning Goal: To talk about yoga and its types among your peer groups using simple and compound sentences.

Success Criteria:

  • Talk about  the 5 steps you listed in the last activity (Update 2) using simple and compound sentences.
  • Write about the sentences you discussed.
  • Read other groups' updates and comment on 1-2.

One to many discussion: One student in the group will talk about one of the asanas or different types of yoga to his/her peers. Talk about the list of steps that your group wrote to complete that particular asanas or yoga. It can be the same as the one you discussed in the previous update.

Then join the steps. Use conjunctions to write compound sentences.

Fig. 3: One to many

Focus on using simple and compound sentences in explaining the steps to the peer group.

After one member is done with his/her turn, others will take part. Later on, each of the group members will go to other groups and tell them about what they have discussed in their group.

Comment: Write your group's paragraph here. Make sure there are compound sentences and conjunctions.

Then read other groups' paragraphs and comment on them. You can use these sentence starters.

I like your paragraph because ......

I like the way you use 4 conjunctions.

Teaching Tips:

On the whiteboard/blackboard, copy out the first 8 sentences of the paragraph of the text, Let's learn about Pranayam and its benefits, from the textbook.

Shivam and Nitin were students of class V.

One day they got up early.

It was a pleasant morning.

They went to a park for a morning walk.

They saw many people in the park.

Some of them were running on the track around the park.

Children were playing.

In the middle of the park, some people were sitting and making different poses.

1. Read the text to the students. Then tell them they have to solve a puzzle (पहेली) in their groups:

  • The first 7 sentences are the same but the eighth sentence is different. In your groups talk about what is the same and what is different.

After 3 minutes, ask groups to share some of their ideas. They might talk about words, punctuation or the length. Some may work out that the first 7 are simple sentences while the last one is a compound sentence. Even if this happens, still continue with the remaining activities so all students understand.

2. Now tell students:

  • The first 7 sentences are called simple sentences. The last sentence is different, it is called a compound sentence. In your groups, talk about what is different between a simple and a compound sentence.

After 3 minutes, ask groups to share some of their ideas.

3. Now go back to the text on the whiteboard/blackboard, and tell students we are going to underline all the verbs. Verbs are 'doing' words. They can also be 'being' words like am, were,  was. The verbs are in italics. Now looking at the underlined/italicised verbs, ask groups to talk about what is different between a simple and a compound sentence. Point out that compound words have conjunctions.

4. Now show the video about conjunctions (संयोजक). Stop the video to clarify understanding if necessary.

Media embedded July 18, 2019

After the video, use Think-Pair-Shares for the students to discuss:

  • What was one thing you learned?
  • What was the most important information in the video?

5. Students can now reinforce (their understanding of conjunctions through the practice worksheets and activities on conjunctions in the textbook. Note you do not have to do more work on verbs as this will be covered in a later chapter.

6. Students then log into Scholar to work on the activity where they join the steps from the Pranayam activity in Update 2 into a paragraph using conjunctions.

4. Writing Sentences

For the Student

Learning Goal: To make sentences using conjunctions.

Success Criteria:

  • Make 5 simple sentences about your own life.
  • Use previous simple sentences or add new sentences to make 5 compound sentences using the learned conjunctions.
  • Write the sentences in the comment box.

Comment:

You can write sentences from your own life-like:

  • At breakfast I ate .....and.....
  • After school I will ......and......

You can comment by suggesting any changes in the sentences of other groups. You can use sentences like:

  • I/we liked your sentences.
  • I/we think the right sentence is........

When you think they are ready, they can log into Scholar and write their sentences. Each student in the group should add a sentence to the comment box.
