How to Draw the Face

Learning Module

Overview

In this module students will learn how to draw the human face. They will have the choice of several videos to master the specific skills needed to find success. In order to assess their skills, a peer review process along with instructor provided feedback and rubrics will be included. The unit is intended to promote new learning by utilizing a flipped classroom model and advocating for authentic education.

Drawing faces is a unit I have taught for all five years I have been an educator, this is the first time the unit is being designed in a way to a.) utilize technology to flip the classroom and b.) promote authentic education pedagogy. The transformation for these two aspects include offering video sources for learning as opposed to teacher directed demonstrations and assessment designed around individual student growth instead of predetermined parameters. All outcomes will still meet state/national learning goals while tailored to the specific student.

Grade Level

This unit is designed for 9th-10th grade students in an introductory or foundations art class. However it can be used for upperclassmen in advanced art courses as a way to review the skills needed draw the face.

Standards and Learning Objectives

Anchor Standard #2. Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.

Introduction to the Face

For Student

1. Take Survey

Before we begin this module I want you to complete a survey. This survey is being conducted so I can determine what you already know coming into the unit in order for me to help you become the best artist you can be. Follow the link below to take the survey. Take your time and answer all questions honestly.

Survey Link

2. Draw Face

Once you have completed the survey, I want you to get a mirror ready and set a timer for 30 minutes. Your goal is to use all 30 minutes to draw yourself. Try as best as you can and get as detailed as possible!

3. Watch videos on drawing tools and how to use them

The following videos will be useful for you to better understand what the drawing materials are best used for and how to properly use them.

The video below goes over pencil grades and helps you better understand what kind of pencil should be used when. The second and third video go over the different tools and supplies that most art students will use. The final video demonstrates how to use belnding stumps, which will be very important for your shading in future lessons.

4. Complete practice assignment

For your practice, I want you to draw an egg. This practice is meant for you to work on seeing and rendering value. When you draw the egg, you need to focus on the lowlights, highlights, and midtones. Take a look at the following document if you need any additional help.

When you finish your practice drawing, upload it to the class site. (Schoology)

5 Self Reflection

Your self reflection should be completed after you have finished everything else within this section. The reflection is about your self-portrait and should be answered in complete sentences with completed thoughts.

1. What are your strengths as a visual artist?

2. What matters to you when you make art?

3. Would you consider your drawing successful? Why or why not?

4. What honest critique would you give yourself?

Post your answers to the class board.

For Instructor

Goals for this section: Students will…

  • Establish a baseline by drawing their face with no intervention
  • Critical voice discussion – talk to students about befriending the voice to help them out, instead of letting it ruin their confidence.
  • Take a pre-unit survey to establish student goals and prior experience
  • Learn how to utilize specific drawing tools/techniques necessary for the following sections.

This section is self guided for the most part. Your job is to understand how to help students understand their critical voices and help them apply this for critiques. The following link will help outline what a critical voice is and how to understand it.

https://www.psychalive.org/critical-inner-voice/

You also need to take a look at the survey data and see what students need the most.

This attached rubrics can be used for all drawings. It is up to you as which one you want to impliment.

As for a timeline, it depends on how often you see your students, but this unit should take a total of about 60-75 minutes of class time.

Drawing the Eyes

For Student

1. Watch the Videos

In this section you will learn how to draw the human eye. You will need to watch any or all of the videos as one may suit your specific drawing style best. As you are watching the video, I would suggest drawing along in your sketchbook to better understand the skills and tewchniques used.

I would suggest watching any of the last four videos along with the first video to get the most out of the lesson.

2. Applying the Videos

After watching the videos, I want you to attempt to draw your eyes from observation. Your goal is to draw your own two eyes as best as you can. After you complete your drawing, upload it to the class site to participate in the critiquing process.

3. Peer Review

Once all of your classmates have uploaded their images, it is time to critique your peers' work. In order for this to work properly, you will need meet the following requirements.

  • Comment on seven (7) of your peers' drawings. Comments should be complete thoughts and provide one (1) point of what the student did well, and one (1) point of what the student needs to improve on. Be civil and provide supportive advice!
  • Respond to five (5) comments made and either support their thoughts, or contradict them. If you disagree, be formal and provide evidence as to why you disagree.
  • Write and submit a summary of your peers' thoughts on your drawing and what you will do to in the future to utilize their advice, if any is given.

For Instructor

Goals for this section: Students will…

  • Learn how to draw eyes by following a video tutorial
  • Assess other students work to become familiar with the peer review process
  1. Students will be using these skills frequently in the classroom so they need to develop these skills
  2. This will also establish a classroom environment where students can trust their peers’ thoughts and opinions
  • Utilize some of the techniques/tools from the previous section

Be sure to help students provide feedback that is articulated. Be sure to help them avoid stating "I like it because it looks good". Get them to delve into why it looks good to them. Watch this video, it will help.

As for a timeline, it depends on how often you see your students, but this unit should take a total of about 90-11 minutes of class time.

Drawing the Nose

For Student

1. Watch the Videos

Similar to the last section, you will need to utilize the following videos to learn how to draw the nose. As before, I suggest drawing along to practice and understand the skills and techniques.

For this section, I would pick either of the first two videos to watch, then watch both of the final two

3. Complete Self-Review

After you have uploaded your image, you will need to complete a self-review. This review is meant for you to be critical on yourself. You will need to assess your drawing and discuss what it going well for you, what you are struggling with, and whether or not you believe you are living up to your personal goals/standards.

When that in complete, you will randomly/annomously be assigned a classmates self-review to read and comment on. Your comment should express your thoughts on if your classmate is correct in their self-review and to offer any tips or advice as help. Be sure to evaluate the drawing and provide helpful feedback.

For Instructor

Goals for this section: Students will…

  • Learn how to draw a nose by following a video tutorial
  • Assess their own work in order to become familiar with the self-review process
  1. This helps students critically assess their own work and understand how to do so
  2. Students will learn how to interact with their critical voice to figure out how to get their drawing to the level they expect from themselves.
  • Review the previous section by incorporating the eyes into the drawing

As for a timeline, it depends on how often you see your students, but this unit should take a total of about 90-110 minutes of class time.

Drawing the Mouth

For Student

1. Watch the Videos

This should be familair to you by now. These videos are just initial resources and should not be taken as an end all be all. If you find another video for any of the sections that works better for you, submit the link to the class page for others to view and utilize.

I would suggest to watch either the first, third, or fifth video with along with the second and fourth videos.

3. Group Critique

For this critique you will facilitate a conversation for your drawing. In order to do this, you need to make a comment on your drawing explaing what you are struggling with and where you are finding success. After you establish you are to look at classmates uploads and respond to their drawing/comment and provide feedback or opinions on things they can do to improve or ask how they achieve a specific look in their drawing. Drawing Hair

For Student

Putting it All Together

For Student

1. Watch Some Videos

Below are several videos on mapping out the face, getting proportions right and getting everything to fit naturally. There isn't a single method that works best or is a magical way of drawing. you will just have to see what works best for you. Again, try following along to practice the techniques. Some demonstrate how to shade, others how to proportion things, or even how to sight. I would suggest watching multiple or all videos.
