For the Student

Hello second and third graders! This learning module is going to teach you all about a growth mindset and how to use it in your everyday lives. You will learn new skills and strategies each day to help you succed socially! The learning module consists of six days of interactive lessons which progressively introduces new concepts while applying and shareing knowledge with one another. At the end of each day, you will reflect and respond to each other to make sure you're relating what they learned to yourself. On the last day, you will present your group project to the class and then it will be shared with the school to spread a growth mindset!

These are the learning standards that you will be exposed to in this learning module:

2A.2b Describe the expressed feelings and perspectives of others.

For the Teacher

The focus and purpose of this learning module is for students grades 2-3 to understand what a growth mindset is and how to use it in their everyday lives. Students will learn a new skill and strategy each day and end the unit with working in groups to create a final project about growth mindset. They will not only present what they learned to the class, but they will also share with the other students in the school to motivate and create a spread of positive thoughts.

This learning module translates to the idea and principles of EPSY 408 because it includes the social and emotional conditions of learning and how there is a need for SEL to be explicitly taught in order to make sure we are teaching the whole child. The Book Dream It! Preliminary Evidence for an Educational Tool to Increase Children’s Optimistic Thinking, inspired me to take a step back and focus on social emotional learning to benefit my students. When schools prioritize SEL, students are proven to accel in their problem solving skills, mental health, and also self awareness (Jacquez et al., 2020). Students first need to be able to succeed socially before they can reach their full potential academically. In the end, they will create an authentic project that will be used and help promote a growth mindset throughout the school . Throughout the whole unit, students interact with each other and provide peer feedback and comments to enhance their work and let them think deeper about the topics being covered.

The growth mindset content was newly designed by me in order to create an engaging, relatable, and powerful unit where students are a part of the knowledge making process. I created 6 days of interactive lessons which progressively introduces a new concept while students apply and share knowledge with one another. At the end of each day, the students will reflect and respond to each other to make sure they're relating what they learned to themselves. To present their projects, students will work in groups and create projects that will be shared with the school to spread what they learned.

For the Student

  • We have learned so much about growth mindset this week! I am so proud of how you have grown so far and I can't wait to continue on this journey with you. Because you all have so much knowledge to share, I thought it would be fun to create a final project to promote having a growth mindset around the school! You can choose between one of the three options below for your final group project! Once you have decided what project interests you the most, I will create groups.

Project 1: Create a video telling tips on how to have a growth mindset

Project 2: Make posters to hang around the school that motivates the other students to have a growth mindset

Project 3: Create a book (Words and Illustrations), that tells a story of a growth mindset idea.

  • I want you to use what you learned and your creativity as you work on your project and remember to challenge yourself to do your best.
  • At the end of the hour, we are going to present your final projects to the class. When you are listening to your classmates presentations, we are going to be giving some feedback before they display or show the final product to the school. We are going to be using the TAG peer feedback template we have been using from the start of the year. For each presentation, you will need to fill out TAG on a piece of paper and then give it to the group.
