Writing a dissertation: A lengthy process that should be well planned. Basic knowledge of scientific writing is assumed; i.e. you should be able to deal with sources adequately; have practice in literature research, in evaluating sources, and in professional formulation. In addition, you will know how to structure a dissertation systematically and logically. Therefore, here only the essential aspects that you should consider, especially for an extensive scientific project, such as a dissertation, will be addressed. Another important topic is scientific writing style. Our knowledge base provides you with many tips and examples. Already during the planning of a dissertation you will realize that you should choose the topic according to your own interests, because it is more difficult to keep up the motivation for an externally imposed topic of the dissertation, in which you are only mildly interested. Since the scope of a dissertation is large, at around 250 to 300 pages, you should therefore, be clear from the outset about your own motivation, the effort involved and the time to be invested, and be sure that you have both the interest and the stamina to plan, implement and complete the project. As a next step, you should get an overview of the sources on your topic. You can research suitable scientific literature such as textbooks, monographs, journals and other subject-specific publications - not Wikipedia entries and popular science online articles - in university and specialist libraries, state libraries, and electronic full-text or literature databases. A good overview of the available literature is provided by subject databases, WorldCat and other sources. Regarding the selected sources, the following applies: Quality before quantity! Already in this phase of the literature research you should take notes or use a program for literature management; narrow down the main topics; get an overview of the necessary literature, and investigate the question whether it is available or can only be viewed locally. With a scientific paper of this size, there is a great danger of getting bogged down. Make sure that you properly weigh which aspects and research questions are relevant to your topic. Refrain from areas that are too far off the beaten track. This will show that you have mastered your topic and that you can proceed systematically. Keep in mind that a dissertation of 500 pages or more will definitely weigh more, but that does not necessarily make it "heavier", i.e. innovative. It is also usually more difficult to publish later, or it must be shortened before publication. It is essential that you deliver new research results on a clearly formulated topic, that you finish within a defined time and that you publish the dissertation quickly. Writing a dissertation is a large project that will take you several years to complete. To avoid getting lost during the writing process, it is advisable to maintain good contact with your supervisor and to seek feedback and opinions from others. Trying to do everything on your own without exchanging ideas with others is rather a hindrance. Below you will find information that can help you in this regard.
