Abstract

In this learning module, beginning band clarinet students will learn to play songs that interest them using the tenets of language acquisition theory. Students will choose songs that interest them from a list, imitate the patterns that they hear in those songs, learn the proper technique for fingering different pitches, and combine that knowledge to properly perform their songs. After this performance, students will learn the basics of standard musical notation, including how their song would be written, and will then write their own song using that notation. They will perform their composition and give and receive feedback using a performance rubric.
